Ruins of Jamestown, Virginia
by John Gadsby Chapman, 1834
Oil on Panel
Painted by by Alexandria-born artist John Gadsby Chapman. Although Jamestown declined for special reasons—the transfer of the capital to Willliamsburg—the ruins nonetheless seemed symptomatic of the general decline of Tidewater Virginia in the early 1800s.
